Civil War Roundhead and Cavalier soldier statue relocated to Beastmarket Hill roundabout near Newark Castle

A Civil War statue in Newark has found itself a new home.

The statue of Civil War Roundhead and Cavalier soldiers, formerly outside Newark Library, was moved on Sunday to its new location at the Beastmarket Hill roundabout.

The move was the brainchild of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s deputy leader Keith Girling.

“I am really pleased that we have managed to get it there,” he said. “It looks fantastic and it is in the rightful place it should be. Now people can see it when they come into the town.”

It is hoped the new location will help prevent the statue being vandalised as in the past.

John Cottee, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council’s communities and place committee, said: “I think the move is good because it is a landmark to see and remember as people approach the town.”
