Neighbourhood policing team clamping down on seasonal anti-social behaviour in Newark and Sherwood
Seasonal anti-social behaviour has reared its head — but keeping it down is a priority for the neighbourhood policing team.
Officers have in recent weeks received reports of street drinking around the Newark Parish Church gardens area, and of young people behaving anti-socially around London Road carpark.
There has also been issues in the Sherwood side of the district, particularly with off-roading around Sherwood Pines and Eakring Road desert area.
As the season changes these issues can become more prevalent as people spend more time out and about, Inspector Charlotte Ellam explained.
It also follows a spate of anti-social behaviour around the YMCA in Newark during recent school holidays.
This is why the District Commander selected tackling anti-social behaviour in Newark town centre and in parks and open spaces as a priority for this quarter.
“We’ve had reports of street drinking and that type of behaviour around the church gardens,” Inspector Ellam said.
“But, we’ve made some good progress there, and Newark and Sherwood District Council has installed improved lighting and CCTV.
“These are really seasonal issues, that we see when the nights get lighter and the weather warmer.”
To tackle issues over in Sherwood, a new quadbike has been rolled out at Ollerton Police Station to expand the team’s reach, and two officers have received additional training to increase the effectiveness of patrols.
The team will also continue to be visible, patrolling parks and open spaces including Sconce and Devon in Newark, where anti-social behaviour and wildlife crime have previously gone hand-in-hand over the summer months.
To further engage with the public about any issues of anti-social behaviour — or other crime — they are experiencing, or any concerns they may have officers will also be holding more public events.
The most recent was a “very well attended” beat surgery held at Newark Library on Wednesday, April 23.
