Climate protestors including Newark and Sherwood Extinction Rebellion to host event in Southwell ahead of COP 29
Environmental campaigners are to host their own free event in Southwell to coincide with this year’s COP 29.
The now annual event that brings nations together to raise awareness of the dangers of climate change, and the event dubbed Southwell COP is set to take place at Trebeck Hall on Wednesday November 20, from 7.30pm.
NHS counsellor Lois Hipkiss Rumsey, who is supporting the event said: “Our local COP is not a gathering of leaders but a space for ordinary people to share their passions, interests and hopes in the spheres of climate action, biodiversity and social justice.
“The evening will involve discussion, engagement and song with the aim of building connections and relationships between like-minded groups and individuals in our area at a time when community resilience and hope are desperately needed.”
This free event will see a number of groups speaking about climate change, including Southwell Flood Forum, Hockerton Housing Project, NHS staff, Newark and Sherwood Extinction Rebellion, and Sustainable Hockerton.
Notts Wildlife Trust, The Woodland Trust, and local councillors have also been invited.
There will be a number of brief presentations interspersed with opportunities to discuss and engage around issues of importance in a forum where every voice matters. Singing will be provided courtesy of local choir Earth Songs.
Refreshments will be provided and free parking is available opposite the Minster on Church Street.
Southwell resident Rob Miller, said: “I am really looking forward to the event. So often people who care deeply about what is happening to our planet and worry about what this means for our children feel isolated and powerless.
“Events like this that provide connection and highlight opportunities for getting involved not only show that people still care and are fighting for all of our futures, but also send the message that we can all make a difference and have a part to play.”
