Newark and Sherwood's community heroes needed for Queen’s New Year’s Honours list

Nominations are being sought for the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.

Newark and Sherwood District Council is calling on more people to nominate members of the community for national honours that recognise those committed to serving and helping Britain.

It believes the incredible amount of hard work and support residents have given this year to help their communities should be recognised.

Nominations close on Tuesday, April 6, at 10am.

Honours such as an OBE, CBE, MBE and BEM are given to those who have made great achievements in public life.

To be nominated, the person must still be actively involved in what they are being nominated for.

Council leader David Lloyd said: “More than ever, this year has shown how many fantastic people we have in our community and we are keen to support them in getting the recognition they deserve.

“Receiving an honour is one of the greatest ways to recognise an individual’s achievements in the UK and there are many people living and working in Newark and Sherwood who have gone above and beyond to help others.

“If you know someone who has made a positive difference I encourage you to make a nomination and contact us if you need help with a supporting letter.”

People are awarded honours for many different reasons, including making a difference to their community or displaying moral courage.

In total, 72% of awards in the New Year Honours List 2020 went to people who had undertaken outstanding work in or for their community.

To nominate someone, fill out a nomination form on the Government website at gov.uk/honours/nominate-someone-in-the-uk

A detailed description will be needed, explaining the reason for the nomination, along with two supporting letters from people who know the nominee personally.

You can include any evidence you have in support of their achievements, for example articles, photographs or letters.

The district council is offering to support nominations by providing suitable endorsements if the nominated person has worked with it to deliver a beneficial service to the community.

Anyone wanting support with a nomination should email communityengagement@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk

Once a nomination has been submitted the decision whether someone gets an honour and the honour they get is decided by an honours committee.

The committee’s recommendations go to the Prime Minister and then to the Queen, who awards the honour personally.
