Greenwood, Nottinghamshire’s community forest, invite public to help plant trees at new Thorney Abbey woodland near Southwell

Residents have been invited to get stuck in and help plant trees at an ambitious new community woodland.

GreenwoodCommunity Forest, hosted by Nottinghamshire County Council, has started to create the new woodland on 49 hectares of land at Thorney Abbey Farm, near Southwell.

The space is anticipated to become home to 86,775 native British woodland trees — and the community is invited to help plant some of these trees.

The terrain is muddy and uneven in places so participants should bring suitable footwear and dress according to the weather.

Once complete the new woodland will have areas of varied densities of trees to create habitats for a diverse range of wildlife, and extended public rights of way to allow the community to use the new amenity.

A community orchard will also be included at the site.
