Complaints against Nottinghamshire Police officers decreased by 29% in 2010/11 compared to a 4% decrease in police complaints figures nationally, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has announced today.

The IPCC has published its annual complaints statistics for all 43 police forces and this saw Nottinghamshire Police record 476 complaints against officers, compared with 669 in the previous year.

The total number of allegations contained within the Nottinghamshire force complaints was 805, down from 964 the previous year.

In 2010/11, Nottinghamshire Police finalised 612 complaint cases in an average of 158 working days, compared to a national average of 107 working days.

The IPCC upheld 14 of 17 appeals (82%) in 2010/11 from members of the public against Nottinghamshire Police for not initially recording their complaint – effectively instructing the force to look again at those complaints.

This compares to 58% of non-recording appeals being upheld nationally.

Complaints against Lincolnshire Police officers increased by 5% in 2010/11.

Lincolnshire Police recorded 430 complaints against officers, compared with 409 in the previous year.

The total number of allegations contained within the Lincolnshire force complaints was 714, up from 685 the previous year.

In 2010/11, Lincolnshire Police finalised 402 complaint cases in an average of 104 working days.

The IPCC upheld 20 of 43 appeals (47%) in 2010/11 from members of the public against Lincolnshire Police for not initially recording their complaint.

Nationally the figures show in 2010/11 that 33,099 complaint cases were recorded about the police in England and Wales – a 4% decrease on the previous year.

This represents the first annual reduction since reforms to the police complaints system were introduced in 2004/05.

The most common aspects of policing that people complained about remained the same as in previous years with nearly 50% of allegations about officers neglecting their duties or being uncivil.
