More than 100 people attend at Newark Market Place to watch King Charles III coronation

More than 100 attended the coronation ceremony to witness a ‘once-in-a-life-time’ event in Newark market place.

The King Charles III coronation, on May 6, was broadcast live on a big screen in the middle of the market.

The market was filled with union jack bunting, a lively market with numerous stalls including its usual and new ones such as Newark in Bloom.

The picnic tables displayed in front of the town hall were full of families and friends ready to witness an historic moment and have food and drinks with their loved ones.

All around the market was noticeable a happy atmosphere, either by those wearing union jack suits, hats, flags, or face paintings.

Antony Pollard, who was wearing a union jack suit said: “We’re here just to support the King obviously.

“I think he will be a good King, he does a lot for the environment.”

His son, Oliver Pollard added: “I think it is amazing because it is a once in a lifetime kind of thing.”

Steampunk couple David and Sharon Walker said: "It is awesome, absolutely brilliant! We wouldn't miss it for the world!

"We decided to come down because we are steampunks and we are having an event here at the end of May anyway so we decided to jump the queue a little bit, we already had our outfits so we decided to come down and join the celebrations of the coronation."

Around 12.30pm started raining but people opened their umbrellas, put up their raincoats and stayed mostly until 1pm when the King and Queen left Westminster Abbey for the Coronation Procession back to Buckingham Palace.

"It is very important that we are here today and it is a once in a lifetime thing and it would be a real shame to miss this," said Susi Wright.

She added: "Newark puts on a lot of great events for you and today is just another one of those so I am really happy to be here."
