Wellow resident accuses Newark and Sherwood District Council of disability discrimination after lodging planning application on Maypole Court
A villager accused a council of disability discrimination after it lodged a planning application for a new home on land outside retirement housing.
The resident, who did not want to be named, lives of Maypole Court, Wellow, where Newark and Sherwood District Council had submitted plans for a new home.
He said the application was a disgraceful scam to deprive disabled people.
He said the planning application, lodged for land directly in front of his home, should be objected to on grounds of disability discrimination, denial of access to properties, disruption of newly-installed communications lines, racketeering a price out of Nottinghamshire County Council and depriving residents of access to fuel deliveries.
He said: “For the last ten years this land has been empty and as a neighbourhood, we have requested adequate road extensions to stop disabled people from having to walk nearly 50 metres to get to their accommodation.
“Every year we have been met with the same excuses as to why the district council will not build better access.
“Since they have submitted a planning application to use this land, it now indicates that they have the finances available and the ‘we can not afford it this year’ excuse is now null and void.
“Numbers 8, 9, and 10 all need this area to provide road access for a tanker delivery for their oil, so unless the council plans on delivering oil for these residents by helicopter, I suggest that the road works be given a top priority and this house building attempt be scrapped,” he said.
A spokesperson for the district council said: “The current application is yet to be considered as the proposal is still under consultation so we’re unable to say too much on the application. The plans will, however, help us to reach our affordable housing target and meet the housing needs in the area.
“The application will be carefully considered by planning officers and any comments from residents will be taken on-board before it is determined whether by planning committee or council officers.”
