A statement from Rowan Cozens, the Deputy Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council said:

“We are experiencing a major incident across our district.

"On behalf of all of our Members, I want to thank our communities who are coming together to support each other.

"I also want to thank individuals who have taken on the essential and much-appreciated role of flood wardens and local businesses which are stepping up as places of safety.

"Our Council officers who have been working, and continue to work, diligently through the weekend, as well as our colleagues from Nottinghamshire Police, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue and the County Council are appreciated.

"I encourage you to listen to and cooperate with them as the safety of our residents is their priority.

“We are still encouraging residents who live near the Trent to prepare as the Environment Agency suggests that — as of Sunday midday — the water levels have not peaked and will continue to rise through the rest of the day, perhaps into tomorrow.

"The levels predicted suggest that flooding could extend to neighbouring properties which have previously been unaffected.

"Our Officers and those from the emergency services are offering lots of advice on how to prepare through their websites and social media so please continue to update yourself through these channels and stay safe.”
