Southwell Town Council object to five new homes on land near The Ropewalk

Plans to build five homes on land off a busy road were objected to by a planning committee.

Southwell Town Council described the planning application as brief.

The application is to build five houses on the rear land of 49 The Ropewalk.

David Martin, the committee chairman, said the plan, which had previously been rejected on flooding grounds, had not addressed that issue.

Michael Jeffrey, fellow committee member, said the council should reiterate its flooding concerns and was frustrated with over-intensification.

The Southwell Civic Society agreed with councillors.

A member said: “The number, scale and design of the proposed houses is not in keeping with the established surrounding developments.

“The impact on the privacy and amenity of the surrounding properties will be extremely detrimental.”

The society also raised parking concerns that would affect other residents on The Ropewalk.

Thomas Foley, a neighbour of the proposed development, said: “A reasonable assumption can be made that the four-bedroom houses will have two cars each, none parked in the garages, allowing no parking spaces for visitors or delivery vehicles.

“There has been a fatality on this road this year and any further parking on the road substantially increases the risk of further fatalities and injuries, of both pedestrians and road users.”

He also referenced the previous application, for two houses on the same site, which was rejected.
