Newark Town Council objects to plans for Tolney Lane, Newark due to flooding concerns
A planning application to make temporary measures permanent on a Newark area Traveller site have been objected to by councillors once again.
Newark Town Council had objected to another similar application in 2021 due to the area being “prone to flooding and is a further extension to the wash land”, and had its reservations about this application.
Mathew Skinner said that due to the flooding which occurs in the area, it would be a “risk” to allow families to live there permanently:
“You wouldn’t put your own families at risk so why theirs? There are sites in the town that are a lot more suitable than this one.”
“This flooding issue has been dragging on for years,” said Laurence Goff, “People are always being evacuated and people who live down there know the risks. They’re happy to be there, I see no problem with it.”
Lisa Geary said that as the town council had objected to the application when it was put forward in 2021, which were the same as when the application was first made in 2012, suggested that the council objects again for the same reasons.
Four councillors voted to object to the plans, with one voting in favour of it, and there were three abstentions.
