WEA offers Long Bennington-based course on Chaucer and medieval society

A study group is offering a course on medieval society.

The course at Long Bennington is offered by a WEA tutor and focuses on pilgrimage and food in the 1400s.

The WEA is the UK’s largest adult education charity, offering courses at venues in the community. It aims to make education accessible to anyone who wants to further their skills.

Starting on May 17, Breakfast With Chaucer’s Pilgrims will offer students the chance to learn about medieval life.

Geoffrey Chaucer, son of a wine merchant, still makes entertaining reading more than 600 years after his death. His understanding of people was matched by an interest in the way they lived, including what they ate and drank.

The course has a dual focus, on the pilgrims travelling to Canterbury and on some of the food they may have eaten en route. Where possible there will be an opportunity to taste versions of these dishes that can still be prepared today.

The WEA has a vibrant student group in Long Bennington, and the course will be held at Long Bennington Village Hall. Students can enrol on the course on the WEA website.

Classes are now moving back to venues after much of the WEA’s provision went online during the pandemic.
