Crime in Nottinghamshire continues to be at its lowest level in more than 30 years, Office for National Statistics figures released today show.

Between January and December 2011, crime fell across Nottinghamshire by 6.9%, showing 5,890 fewer victims of crime compared to the same period in 2010 where a total of 85,875 offences were recorded.

It is the first time in more than 30 years that all crime offences have reached below 80,000. In 1981, the force recorded 88,927 offences.

Home Office headlines show that across Nottinghamshire:

• All crime is down from 85,875 to 79,985 offences

• Robbery has reduced by 19.4% (302 offences)

• Domestic burglary continues to fall against the national upward trend with 1911 fewer victims (a reduction of 29.1%)

• Vehicle crime has fallen by 10.7% (891 offences)

• Sexual offences has reduced by 111 crimes (a reduction of 9.8%)

• There are 471 fewer victims of violence against the person (a 3% reduction)

• Criminal damage offences fell by 11.3%, a reduction of 1825 offences

• There have been 451 fewer drug offences (a fall of 10.1%)

• Most serious violence offences have fallen by 6.1%, 38 fewer offences

More and more people across the city and county are increasingly satisfied with the service they receive from the police, with the force now ranked 7th nationally out of 42 police forces, up from 27th last year, for overall customer satisfaction.

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Broadbent said: “This is an outstanding performance against a difficult backdrop of financial challenges and significant cuts in our budget.

"The figures reflect our determination to continue to keep people safe and the huge increase in confidence shows that the public are being kept informed and are receiving a service we can be proud of.

"We are bucking the national trend with our reductions in burglary. We have the largest reductions in the country whereas other parts of the country have seen an increase.

"Other forces are now looking at us to see what we are doing differently to maintain these reductions and continue to see crime fall.

“We will continue to work closely with other agencies in a bid to get to the root of issues that can make a difference as to whether someone chooses a life of crime.

“Each and every member of the force is committed to helping keep people safe and reducing crime. We are in no way complacent and all have a part to play to ensure we keep improving and offenders know that if they commit crime here, they will be caught and put before the court.”

Theft and handling offences saw an increase of 3.8%, and officers are working closely with businesses across Nottinghamshire to implement measures to make it difficult for thieves to operate. Other initiatives to close down ways for criminals to sell on stolen good are also being carried out.
