Residents were left upset after trees were suddenly cut down.
Six trees were given the chop on London Road and Baldertongate, Newark.
One resident said: “The trees were cut down by workmen leaving ugly stumps.
“A number of residents are disturbed and upset by this as the trees were young and healthy.”
A spokesman for Via East Midlands, which manages the road network for Nottinghamshire County Council, said the removals of the trees are part of the Severn Trent works for the open trenching.
They will be replanted when the works have been completed because they are highway trees.
