Dad of son with cancer organises Teenage Cancer Trust football fundraiser
A father from North Muskham has organised a charity football fundraiser for his son who is receiving cancer treatment.
Two groups of dads from North Muskham and Lincoln went head-to-head to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust on July 7 for one son who was diagnosed earlier this year.
Dave Brumpton and his 19-year-old son Daniel, organised the fundraiser to "give something back" to the charity trust and help other young sufferers after Daniel received treatment for chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML).
Mr Brumpton explained that since his son was diagnosed with CML in February, his treatment has thankfully been pain free, but added this is not the case for a lot of young people with cancer.
"We have held this match four times over the last six years now, everyone pays £10 to play and we also take the donation bucket around as well," he said. "We have raised money in the past for Beaumond House and for a lad who needed a wheel chair but wanted to give something back to the Teenage Cancer Trust who have helped Daniel in his treatment."
CML is a type of blood cancer that affects myeloid cells – a type of white blood cell – and with the illness, bone marrow produces too many of these cells that interfere with normal blood cell production.
The devoted dad who is also competing in the London Marathon next year, managed to raise £706 on the day of the football match and a further £875 through his son's Just Giving page, adding Daniel was "absolutely flabagasted" with the generosity of people.
"Even just the support messages that Daniel was receiving were amazing - it made us overwhelmed. Not everyone is as fortunate when suffering with cancer, so this was a time to get together with our friends and raise funds for every other teenager," he said.
Mr Brumpton added that Daniel's treatment is going very well and that his illness in under control, allowing him to lead an active life and even played the full 90 minutes of the charity football match himself.
