Clients at Newark Mencap’s The Avenue adult day care centre visit Newark Creates umbrella display celebrating neurodiversity
An installation celebrating people’s differences brought smiles to the faces of clients at an adult social care group.
Clients at Newark Mencap’s day centre, The Avenue, which meets at London Road Congregational Church, took a trip into the centre of town to see the colourful display of umbrellas in the market place.
The display, by Newark Creates in partnership with the ADHD Neurodiversity Foundation, is aimed at raising awareness and acceptance around neurodivergent conditions.
Joint manager at The Avenue, Sharon Wainwright, said: “We support people with learning disabilities and we thought it would be great to have a photo with the umbrellas — obviously it is very close to our hearts.
“They loved it, really loved it — we all did. It was fabulous.”
Timothy Wiltshire was among the clients who visted.
He added: “They were nice. It shows the difference of autism and other things.
“They’re pretty colours.”
The display forms part of the national Neurodiversity Umbrella Project and is designed to represent the one in five of people who have a neurodevelopmental condition, such as ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia or Tourette’s syndrome.
