Dealers hold key to attack

Police say Newark’s drug dealers hold the key to them finding the person responsible for an attempted handbag snatch from a widow.

Officers say the attack on Mrs Anne Warriner (56) in Charles Street, Newark, was motivated by drugs.

Mrs Warriner, who has epilepsy, was beaten and sprayed in the face with CS spray.

She was saved from further harm when tradesmen and neighbours went to help her.

Witnesses said she was punched and kicked.

The attacker was described as white, 6ft and slim. He is pale and has shortish brown hair, possibly curled at the neck. He wore a grey hooded jacket.

Inspector Martin Holford, of Newark police, believed whoever was responsible needed money for drugs.

“We have already interviewed lots of people in connection with what happened,” he said.

“A dealer knows who is responsible — that is the way it works. This sort of street crime isn’t going to happen here in Newark. It will not be tolerated.”

Police are continuing to investigate the possibility that the attack on Mrs Warriner, on Monday last week, was linked to an incident in Balderton three days earlier.

A man who left the Chesters, on Main Street, saw two men in the garden of an elderly woman’s home.

He confronted them and was sprayed in the face with CS gas. They fled.

Anyone with information about either incident should contact Newark CID on 01636 605999.
