Significant debris will be cleared from the site of the former Grove Leisure Centre today after it was destroyed by a fire.

At its height approximately 50 firefighters and nine appliances from Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire tackled the fire.

Nottinghamshire County Council is working with the emergency services and partner agencies to investigate the fire.

Newark Academy is closed today (Monday) to ensure the safety of students accessing the site. It will be open tomorrow as normal.

It said contractors had been working over the weekend to ensure the school grounds were safe for pupils.

The school asked parents to remind their children that the site of the fire was very hazardous and a working building site.

Normal drop off and pick up arrangements will be in place on Tuesday as there is full access to the school site.

If any parents have further questions they should contact the school.

"The decision was not taken lightly but the health and safety of our students will always be our first priority.

"I look forward to welcoming everyone back tomorrow."
