The old Newark fire station is currently being demolished.

Work is ongoing at the former Newark Fire Station to safely demolish the building on Boundary Road.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said the construction materials used in 1960s buildings, meant the appointment of a licensed contractor.

A spokesman said: “The contracted team is working under notification to the Health and Safety Executive. The team are working diligently to remove the materials.

“Once cleared, the safe demolition of the buildings will commence in preparation for future development.

“This work is being undertaken by GBM Demolition and is due to be completed in August.”

What is left of the former fire station (pictured) stands next to a new state-of-the-art redevelopment on Boundary Road, which was shortlisted for an award at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Awards 2019.

The £3m station took just over 12 months to construct and is the base for both Newark’s wholetime and retained firecrews.

The new build includes office space, meeting rooms, fire engine bays and external training tower.

The facility includes several energy-saving features, including intelligent lighting and solar panels fitted to the roof.
