Newark and Sherwood District Council leader on fourth step of government roadmap to easing lockdown
The Prime Minister has announced the fourth step in the government roadmap can go ahead, writes district council leader David Lloyd.
His announcement has created mixed feelings.
On the one hand, won’t it be amazing to get back to some sort of normality, to be able to see loved ones without restriction, go to events and really begin to enjoy our leisure time again?
On the other, I know some of us feel very nervous.
For so long now, we have had to take care and maintain social distancing, wear masks, get regular tests. Are we really ready for the big re-opening?
What if there’s an upsurge in cases or a new variant?
I’m looking forward to embracing the restored freedoms we can all enjoy; re-discovering some of those things we’ve missed out in lockdown.
We are so lucky we have so many places to go and see on our doorstep.
Last week’s book festival demonstrated just how good we are at putting on events to bring the town together. We have a filled programme coming up at the Palace Theatre, the castle and the minster.
There really is something for everyone.
If you feel nervous about joining in, what can you do to ensure you and your family stay safe?
Well, the basic advice hasn’t changed.
It’s best to meet up outdoors if you can; if you do go to an event, get a lateral flow test before and after just to be sure; hands, face, space still applies — wear a face mask, even if it isn’t mandatory, keep your hands clean by washing or sanitising regularly and keep space between each other.
As we move into a post-lockdown world, be considerate. If someone feels uncomfortable, and asks you to put a mask on, do so, it’s no great hardship and is courteous.
While we are seeing legal restrictions lifting, government guidance is still in place and we should not see this move as an absolute return to normal.
I urge any of you still waiting for your vaccine jab to go and get it. Over 80% of our adult residents are vaccinated so far with two-thirds now double-dosed.
Like many of you, our council officers, most of whom have been home-based, will be returning to the office in a phased way from Monday.
If you’re returning to the office as well, consider whether you’ll offer a phased return, retain social distancing and mask wearing like we are?
My big message as we move into the post lockdown world is, have fun, be kind and rediscover life in Newark and Sherwood.
