Donated bras are the stars of charity effort for Africa
Two friends have started to collect unwanted bras and new pants to help a charity that distributes them to women and children in Africa.
Mrs Sam Waterhouse, of North Muksham, said she had decided to look for somewhere that could use virtually new bras in good condition and had come across Smalls For All, which is based in Scotland.
“Most charity shops just send bras for recycling, but I wanted somewhere that could make good use of ones that were still in good condition,” she said.
Having found out more about the charity she appealed for help from friends, family and villagers and so far has collected more than 300 bras.
She is continuing to appeal for donations, which can be taken to her home, on Nelson Lane.
Mrs Waterhouse’s friend, Mrs Hilary Ward, of Norwell, decided to help with the appeal and has organised a collection box in Norwell Village Stores, with permission from owner Mrs Brenda Thomas.
So far, Norwell villagers have donated about 100 bras.
Honeytrap Lingerie on Cartergate, Newark, is also accepting donations.
Sam and Hilary are hoping other stores will agree to be collection points, too.
'A simple way that people can help make a difference'
They want new pants for children aged three to 15 and women’s pants in sizes eight to 16, along with bras that are new or in good condition.
Smalls For All was set up in 2010 by Maria Macnamara after she read an article about the problems that women and children in Zimbabwe face because of a lack of underwear.
It is seen as a status symbol and offers a degree of security because women who can afford underwear tend to be regarded as having someone who cares for them and are not seen as vulnerable.
The charity distributes the underwear through links with established charities and hospitals, and through camps and children’s homes and orphanages.
“This is just such a simple way that people can help make a difference,” Sam said.
“If you want to show us your support pop to the shop and pick up some new pants or raid your bra drawer.”
