A pothole has been fixed on Bowbridge Road after several drivers reported it on Bowbridge Road, Newark
Several people have reported having their car tyres blown up by three big potholes on a busy road.
Potholes on Bowbridge Road in Newark have appeared between Earp Avenue and the roundabout with Boundary Road, on the same side as the school.
They were reported to VIA East Midlands by Nottinghamshire county councillor Keith Girling and were filled last Friday (December 8). However, motorists have reported having to spend more than £100 to get their cars repaired after suffering damage along the road.
Chairmaine Price had her five-year-old daughter with her on Thursday (December 7) when her tyre blew up on Bowbridge Road.
She said: “My first reaction was ‘how am I gonna pay for it?’. I’ve had the car for one week and had only changed the tyre the day before.
“Money is very tight this close to Christmas and it’s an expense I could do without.”
The two had to walk home together on Thursday evening. Charmaine said she had to pay £130 to replace the tyre – and that she had to miss some school runs as she couldn’t do them without her car.
Adam Whitworth also suffered an issue when driving in the area at about 9.45pm on Thursday.
He said: “I was looking towards the roundabout to see if any cars were coming, next thing I know, there’s an almighty bang and I just think what the hell did just happen?
“It popped the tyre and the wheel of my car.”
Adam spent £220 to get one tyre and wheel repaired. However, he believes he might need to repair a second tyre, which will take the bill up to £370.
“This is not ideal to happen so close to Christmas time,” he added.
Kerry Barnsdale, meanwhile, was queuing on Bowbridge Road and didn’t notice the pothole until it was too late to avoid it, given the proximity to the central reservation.
She hit the pothole, which resulted in damage to the side of her Range Rover – damaging the wheel and giving her a flat tyre.
The repairs to her car cost £100 plus vat.
Claire Hunsley hit a pothole on the road on her way home on Thursday at about 6.30pm.
Her car ended up with a flat tyre and a damaged alloy wheel. She is planning to have the vehicle checked over to see the full extent of the damage as she now feels as though her suspension and tracking do not feel right.
“I phoned the police right in the moment because me and other drivers felt like we were in the dark. It needed a traffic cone stuck in it because so many vehicles were hitting it,” said Claire.
She added: “I was driving home with my son who has Down’s syndrome. We were heading home, having been out, and my first panic was to get him home before he got too stressed because a situation like that can cause him great stress.
“On top of any damage to my car, I have also missed out on two events that were paid for, one on Thursday evening and the other one on Friday, while I sorted the damaged alloy wheel out.”
The Advertiser understands that one garage alone has replaced 15 car tyres due to the potholes on Bowbridge Road.
People whose cars have been damaged by potholes can try to claim the cost of their repairs back.
A Nottinghamshire County Council spokesman said: “If people are experiencing problems with potholes or any other highways issues, they should report this at our highways hub on the Nottinghamshire County Council website, via our customer services team, or by using the MyNotts App.
“Anybody wishing to make an insurance claim for pothole damage should report the defect using one of these channels and then contact the council’s customer services team, with as much detail as possible. The team will then process the information and pass the information to our risk and insurance team if appropriate.”
