Transport minister Mr Chris Mole cut the first sod as the dualling of the A46 from Newark to Widmerpool officially started on Friday.

The ceremony took place just off the Margidunum roundabout towards Gunthorpe where part of the new road will be laid.

Mr Mole said: “It’s a really positive development for people living along the route from Widmerpool to Farndon.

“I know that some of the villages along the way will find relief from the bypass, especially communities that have struggled because of it.”

At its peak 500 workers will be employed on the project, which will cost £380m and is due to finish in 2012.
