Nottinghamshire Police dog and handler take down a school burglar on tonight's Police Interceptors

A tenacious police dog who was previously stabbed in the face in the line of duty chalked up another in a long line of successes after helping to catch a burglar.

Police dog Quantum, who has notched up more than 100 arrests during his career with Nottinghamshire Police, was working with his handler Police Constable Jen Ellse when they were called to reports of an intruder on site at a Nottinghamshire school.

The brave duo quickly arrived and started to search the school after PC Ellse was made aware that an offender had been seen inside.

She said: “The incident happened during the early hours of the morning. The school has multiple corridors and rooms within rooms which made it a complex search area.

“While Quantum remained on his lead I gave repeated warnings for the offender to show himself now while we searched around the corridor area where he had been seen. He was given multiple opportunities to surrender himself as we continued searching.

“After I let Quantum off his lead he went up the corridor, turned down another narrow corridor and into another room. I then heard him barking, a good distance away from me, and I shouted for the offender to get down now.

“He had numerous chances to surrender and say he was there but he did neither and hadn’t replied to any of the verbal warnings.

“He appeared desperate to escape but he was detained after I followed Quantum into an office which led to another room.

“We’re all so proud of Quantum. He is incredibly brave and relentless and all his hard work and determination has resulted in many criminals being brought to justice.”

The German Shepherd cross Belgian Malinois joined the force in 2016 and was partnered with PC Ellse a year later.

In May 2018, Quantum was stabbed in the face while trying to detain two robbery suspects who he had tracked from the crash site of a car they had stolen. PC Ellse also sustained an injury to her eye socket and her gloves were slashed whilst attempting to make the arrests.

But that didn’t stop the dynamic duo, who have attended hundreds of jobs together.

In April 2020, Quantum was once again injured as he detained an offender, who had knocked a British Transport Police officer unconscious, at Nottingham railway station.

The police dog was beaten, and injured, by a large piece of wood with a nail in it.

But again Quantum bounced back and his tenacious work has subsequently led to many more arrests as well as being honoured nationally for his heroics.

Wictor Salek, 23, of Alvey Terrace, Radford, pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary following the incident which happened on June 11, 2021.

He was fined £350, ordered to pay a £95 victim surcharge and £85 costs. He was also fined an extra £100 for failing to surrender to court.

As well as this, in tonight’s episode officers make a number of arrests after reports of a shopkeeper being threatened with a firearm and there are dramas in pyjamas when Nottinghamshire Police knife crime team members stop two suspected drug dealers in their tracks.

Catch all this and more in tonight’s brand new episode of Police Interceptors at 8pm on Channel 5.
