Edwinstowe has entered into the RHS Britain in Bloom

For just the second time ever, Edwinstowe has entered into the RHS Britain in Bloom.

Competition took place on Monday, July 3. – Writes Joe James.

At the end of the judging, everyone gathered for a reception at Edwinstowe Cricket Club, which gave judges the opportunity to meet volunteers, sponsors and contributors.

At the reception, East Midlands In Bloom judges Liz Alun-Jones, and Malcolm Fisher had the chance to see the portfolio of work for this year.

There was a presentation by Lee Brazier, from ATTFE College, where certificates were handed out to the volunteers who took part in the Horticultural course earlier in the year.

Edwinstowe is also known as Robin Hood’s village, making it a historically important village and a tourist attraction.

The idea behind entering the competition was to make the village even more attractive, and the group was set up by volunteers, residents and members of local community groups and organisations, which was supported by the Parish Council.

In last year’s competition, Edwinstowe were awarded a silver medal, while Launay’s Restaurant also finished runner-up in the Best Pub/Hotel category, with the Thoresby Miners Memorial Garden being awarded a discretionary honour.

Additionally, there have been partnerships formed with groups such as RSPB, Sherwood Forest Friends of the Earth re-wilding team, local businesses, Hope Springs gardening project, Inspire learning, and the Woodhead Group.

With support and success, the group decided to continue with annual entries, but went independent as it is in line with the spirit of “In Bloom”, and also due to more flexibility in working and funding.

Going forward, the group will continue their emphasis on being ecologically friendly by using wildlife and pollinator friendly plants, as they look to keep on improving and being successful.
