Essential maintenance carried out on Bingham’s iconic Butter Cross
Essential maintenance is being carried out to a town’s iconic feature.
Bingham is perhaps best known for the Butter Cross that stands in the tow’s market place, which is a dominating feature.
Designed by the Nottinghamshire architect TC Hine, the Butter Cross was erected in 1861, in memory of John Hassall, land agent for the lord of the manor. Hassall died in 1859, aged 70.
For years after his death, ‘on a certain day in the spring, garlands of primroses decorated the eight pillars of the Butter Cross, brought by people who knew him’.
Rushcliffe Borough Council and contractors are carrying out essential maintenance to the structure, but nothing that will see any significant changes.
Work is anticipated to finish next month.
