Event raises thousands for troops
Wounded soldiers and their families will benefit to the tune of about £5,000 thanks to the Advertiser and the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society's fundraising efforts.
The money was raised through ticket sales for last week's special luncheon in honour of soldiers serving with the 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters) at Newark Showground, through event sponsorship and donations, and a raffle.
It also includes money donated in return for hundreds of Union flags.
The flags were waved by an appreciative 5,000 strong crowd that lined the streets of Newark when the battalion exercised its freedom of the town.
The money will be split between 2 Mercian's benevolent fund, and the Newark Patriotic Fund, which helps the families of the wounded with costs associated with their care.
