‘Everything must go’ sale sees Wilko Newark shelves emptying

Newark’s Wilko store has scarcely looked so busy with customers taking advantage of the ‘everything must go’ offer.

While no potential closure date has been made known to staff, some of the shelves in the St Mark’s Place outlet are already empty as customers rush to bag a bargain.

Wilko began its sale of remaining stock on Friday and discounts of up to 30% are currently available.

Staff seem to be focusing on ensuring the aisles looked stocked on entry as the store shrinks inwards as customers snap up a bargain.

It is unclear how long stocks will last, or whether deliveries to stores are still being made.

The budget high street retailer filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators last Thursday giving them just 10 days to find a rescue deal or face collapse.

The decision came after the company continued to face financial pressure in the wake of the pandemic, and despite attempting to cut costs and receiving a £40m lifeline from Homebase owner Hilco earlier this year,

Wilko’s, famous for being a Nottinghamshire family-owned business, has 400 branches nationally and around 12,000 employees are at risk.
