Sherwood Energy Village, a unique attempt by a former mining community to regenerate its own economy, has gone into liquidation.

The project which created 1,500 jobs on the former pit site led to the community being named the most “enterprising place in Britain.”

But the downturn in the property market has left the venture short on income.

It has been unable to repay a bank loan and has had to take insolvency measures.

Nine people will lose their jobs.

The former colliery site has been transformed into an environmentally-friendly business park.

Thirteen tenants have moved in bringing 1,500 jobs – five hundred more than were lost when the pit closed. They are unaffected by the liquidation and will remain at the site.

Stan Crawford, chief executive of the energy village, said; “This is a very sad day for us.

“We have tried everything to resolve this situation but have been unable to reach an agreement with the banks that would see us continue.

“We are all proud of what we have achieved."
