Anderson & Garland Auctioneers, Newcastle, auctioning Charles I Civil War Siege Piece of Newark Castle coins
Extremely rare siege coins minted in Newark during the Civil War are going up for auction next week, and are expected to fetch thousands of pounds.
Anderson & Garland Auctioneers of Newcastle have listed Charles I Civil War Siege Piece of Newark Castle coins are part of their upcoming Stamps & Coins Auction, which feature a wide selection of rare and historically significant coins and stamps.
The silver shilling is dated 1645, and was minted during the third and final siege of Newark during the last year of the First English Civil War in 1646.
Besieged Royalists, facing a shortage of currency, established a mint to produce lozenge-shaped coins made from silver flagons and drinking cups, donated by loyal Royalist noblemen.
The coins bore a Royal crown between the initials C R on the obverse, with the reverse featuring the inscription ‘Obs Newarke’ — OBS being an abbreviation of obsidium, Latin for siege.
This very rare coin is in very fine condition, and is estimated to sell for between £1,000 to £2,000.

Also going up for auction on Thursday in the Stamps & Coins Auction are a George III ‘Northumberland’ Shilling from 1763, estimated at £700 to £1,000; an Anne Shilling from 1708 with an estimated value of £200 to £300, and a William IV Shilling from 1836, estimated at between £150 to £250.
