Fake bank notes warning

Businesses in Newark are being warned to watch out for a batch of bogus bank notes circulating in the area.

There have been five recorded incidents since the beginning of August of fake £20 notes being used in the town, with forged £10 and £5 notes also seized.

The latest seizure was £65 from the Post Office, in Kirkgate, after staff reported receiving it from a number of businesses in the area.

Police are now asking people in the Newark area, specifically retailers and the owners of bars and clubs, to be vigilant against counterfeit currency.

Pc Hollie Shortley said: “It is a criminal offence to knowingly retain or pass on counterfeit notes.

“If it doesn’t look right, if the paper feels different to other genuine money you have, or if you have doubt about the holographic strip, watermark or metallic thread then report it to the police.”
