Familiar face of well-known Newark butchers, F. Doncaster, retires after 48 years of service

A familiar face at a Newark butchers for almost a half a century has retired.

Pat Eason, 69, of Windsor Road, Newark, started working for F. Doncaster when she was 21, so has clocked up 48 years of service.

Robert Doncaster, who has known Pat since he was four, said she started working in the Portland Street shop for his father, John, and then continued when he took over the business in 1984.

Robert said Pat had endlessly supported the family through the years.

“She has been a big part of the shop for a very long time. She is a great lady with a great sense of humour and very popular with the customers,” he said. “She will really be missed.”

Pat, whose husband Graham retired three years ago, said they planned to enjoy more holidays together, and were looking forward to next year, when their family had several milestone birthdays and anniversaries to mark.

Dozens of people have sent their thanks and best wishes to Pat via the Doncasters Facebook page, saying they had enjoyed chatting with her in the shop, and that nothing was too much trouble.

Pat said she had been happy in her work, working with people who had kept her young, but the time was right for her to retire.

“I will miss the customers because a lot of them have become friends,” she said.

The shop has closed this week, after 99 years on Portland Street, ready for a move to new premises in nearby Edward Avenue. Doncasters also have shops in Southwell and Claypole.
