Family is hard to beat
Two grandparents and their granddaughter were among the trophy winners at the 33rd St Giles’ Church, Balderton, Annual Craft and Horticultural Show on Saturday.
The show’s chairman, Mr Derrick Hough (71) of Wetsyke Lane, Balderton, his wife, Mrs Joyce Hough, and their granddaughter, Amy Birch (7) each won trophies.
Mr Hough was awarded the St Giles’ cup for most points in show and the Wilson cup for most points in the flower section. Mrs Hough won the Derrick Hough shield for home produce and Amy won jointly the Children’s cup for most points in the children’s section.
Amy’s mother, Mrs Linda Birch, of St Giles’ Way, Balderton, was one point away from beating her mother, Mrs Hough, to the trophy for home produce.
At this year’s show there were 53 exhibitors who displayed 538 exhibits which 100 more than last year.
Mr Hough said: “We wouldn’t have a show if so many people didn’t come along. This is a church show really but we get people from the village who don’t particularly go to church who come and support us.
“We’d really like to thank all the people who sponsor the event because they allow us to make a little bit of money for the church.”
Mr Hough said he was particularly pleased with the number of children entering the competition — up from 28 to 31 this year.
He said: “They really are the future of the show.”
