A trial date has been set for a 31-year-old accused of triple murder and a triple attempted murder.

Valdo Calocane, appeared for the first time from custody today at Nottingham Crown Court.

Nottinghamshire’s Chief Constable, Kate Meynell was in court for the hearing alongside family member of one of those who died in the Nottingham city horror attacks, 65-year-old school caretaker Ian Coates.

Calocane, of no fixed abode, is charged with the murder of 19-year-old students, Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and Mr Coates.

He is further charged with the attempted murder of three people hit by a van, Sharon Miller, Marcin Gawronski and Wayne Birkett, who is from Newark, but now living in Nottingham.

There was no application for bail.

Judge Nirmal Shant KC fixed the trial for the week commencing January 12, though he said it was likely to begin on January 15.

Further hearings due to the complexity of the case have been listed for August 18, September 15 and a further plea and trial preparation hearing on September 25.
