Family of George Sims pay tribute to characterful teen who died in van crash on Victoria Street, Newark




The family of a teenager tragicallly killed in a van crash have paid tribute to a characterful and entertaining young man who loved to be the centre of attention.

The family of George Sims, 19, from Newark, say they take heart from the outpouring of grief and love that the community has shown since George’s death.

Dozens of people have visited the scene of the devastating crash to pay their respects and lay flowers.

Many more have sent George’s family their best wishes as they try to process their loss.

George’s aunty, Becky Dobb, said: “Heartfelt thanks to all that have left messages, sent flowers and cards as we try to process the loss of our George.

“We are overwhelmed with the outpouring of love we have received for George and have been comforted by the many stories of him we have learned about, since his passing.

“George was such a character, full of life, with a cheeky smile and always full of random questions.

“George would talk to anyone, which is why so many in the community knew him and he became an extended family member in many homes around Newark.

“He loved cars, motorbikes, quad bikes and enjoyed fixing them up which was a passion he shared with his dad, Evan.

“George loved a variety of music, especially Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s Islands In The stream - a favourite he shared with his mum, Louise.

“George was always the entertainer and loved being the centre of attention among his siblings James, Shannon, Daniel, Bethany and Jack and always made them laugh with his crazy antics.

“George’s passing has impacted so many people and the wider community.

“For us life will not be the same again.”

George died at the scene of the crash on Victoria Street, Newark, on Thursday night of last week.

Firefighters from the Newark Fire Station attended, following a call at 10.33pm.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said when crews arrived one vehicle was on its side with two male casualties trapped inside.

Both were freed but George was pronounced dead at the scene.

Area Manager Andy Macey said: "On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, I would like to express my condolences to the man’s family and friends for their loss.

"We are grateful to our firefighters and all other emergency services for their support at the scene."

Detective Constable Liah Lane, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a truly tragic incident that resulted in the untimely death of a young man.

“Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family and friends, who are currently being supported at this sad time.

“An investigation is currently ongoing to establish exactly what happened, so it’s extremely important that anyone who can assist us does so.

“We’d ask that anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash cam footage or CCTV that could aid our inquiries comes forward immediately.”
