Farnsfield St Michael's Church of England Primary Academy headteacher's coronavirus remarks made as chairman of the Poultry Club of Great Britain condemned

A headteacher has retained the support of governors and the trust she works for despite comments that coronavirus was nature's way of cleansing the planet.

Louise Carpenter, who is the head at Farnsfield St Michael's Primary School, made the remarks in a newsletter speaking as the chairwoman of The Poultry Club of Great Britain, which has Prince Charles as its Patron.

Referring to covid-19, Mrs Carpenter wrote: "I believe this is nature’s way of cleansing and protecting our planet for the future.”

Her comments led to upset for parents and grandparents whose children attend the Church of England school.

Matthew Parris, chief executive of the Minster Trust For Education, and Jennie Fieldwick, chair of governors, said in a joint statement: "We understand that Mrs Carpenter wrote an article for a publication unrelated to her role as headteacher of Farnsfield St Michael’s Primary School.

"This article has caused some unintentional offence and has been interpreted out of context and in a way not intended.

"Mrs Carpenter and the associated organisation have issued an unequivocal apology.

"Mrs Carpenter has the full support of the trust and of the governors at Farnsfield St Michael’s.

"The thoughts of our whole learning community are with all those affected by covid-19 and our gratitude extends to all key workers helping us through this time of crisis."

Nigel Frith, Diocesan Director of Education, said: "I am fully in support of Louise Carpenter, as a person and as a headteacher.

"Her work as a headteacher is outstanding — she is both professional and caring. Her comments have been taken out of context.

"Parents who are concerned can of course contact Louise about this; that would be the appropriate channel for them."

The Poultry Club of Great Britain was approached for comment, but has not yet responded.
