Final week for museum

Newark's Millgate Museum will close for the final time a week on Sunday after activities during the half-term break.

Newark and Sherwood District Council will start decommissioning the museum from the end of the month to give staff the chance to get things in order.

A new museum and National Civil War Centre is due to open in Newark in late 2014.

The final week at Millgate Museum starts on Saturday with children's craft workshops, where they can choose to make a favourite item from sessions run in the past.

Places must be booked for the morning workshop, but there will be an open drop-in session in the afternoon.

On Sunday visitors are being asked to take an item for a commemorative scrapbook, Memories of Millgate.

It is hoped people will add their memories, photographs, pictures or stories about the museum.

There will be the chance to add to the book the following Saturday.

The museum will be open from 10.30am to 4.30pm during the week with children's workshops and traditional games.

On Wednesday there will be a chance to meet museum characters from its successful learning programme.

On Friday visitors can reminisce about objects in the displays, and on Sunday there will be the chance to talk about the museum collections and look at what happens behind the scenes.

The business manager for museums and heritage, Melissa Hall, said although the museum was closing the work of the museum service would continue at the council's resource centre and through learning and outreach programmes.
