Firefighters have successfully tackled a blaze from a car which set alight in a supermarket car park.

The car, which was a Renault Megane, set alight as the owner pulled into the car park at Sainsbury's on London Road, Balderton, at around 3pm today (Tuesday).

Customers and staff from the supermarket were evacuated as firefighters worked to distinguish the blaze.

Mr Steve Town, the owner of the car, said: "The brakes felt like they went just as we pulled into the car park and as I got out somebody said there's some burning fluid dripping from underneath it.

"I called the fire brigade and the fluid which was dripping from underneath was splashing back and set the whole thing alight."

The burnt out shell of the car remains in the car park and is due to be recovered.
