Firm steps in to support family's defibrillator appeal
A widow who raised money for a defibrillator after the death of her husband says she was thrilled that one of Newark’s biggest employers has pledged money to buy a second.
Hundreds of pounds have been donated to the appeal set up by Mrs Ann Marriott, of Winthorpe, and her grandson, Marcus, who lives in Newark.
Ann said the process had helped her cope with the death of her husband, David, who suffered a massive heart attack just minutes after dropping off Marcus at Barnby Road Academy in October.
David was taken to Lincoln County Hospital but did not survive.
Although Ann does not believe a defibrillator would have saved David’s life she has put her energies into raising enough money for one to be installed outside the school.
It is likely that the target will be met for the first defibrillator but, after Bakkavor staff read the Advertiser’s story about Ann’s fundraising, the dessert manufacturer has agreed to pay for another in the town.
They asked Ann to choose her preferred location — and she said the decision was based on the special bond between Marcus and his grandfather.
'It is a very special place'
“Newark Castle was David’s favourite place to go with Marcus,” said Ann. “They went there at least twice a week.
“It is a very special place and that is what made me choose it.”
Kerry Rigby, a representative on Bakkavor’s employee forum, said staff thought it was a worthwhile cause.
“We all said it was a great idea,” said Kerry. “I read the story in the Advertiser and really thought it was something we should help with.
“Hopefully this defibrillator will help the community and be there for years to come.”
One of Ann’s colleagues, Kevin Hempsall, is walking from North Hykeham to Skegness to raise money for the Barnby Road defibrillator.
People can donate at the JustGiving page.
Proceeds from a fancy dress day at Newark’s Appleton Day Nursery tomorrow will be given to the defibrillator appeal.
