First steps taken on Ollerton's high street regeneration scheme

The first stage of a scheme for the major regeneration of a town centre has been approved.

Support has been given for a feasibility study for a project that could transform Ollerton’s high street.

The proposal was outlined to members of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s economic development committee by director of growth and regeneration Matt Lamb.

It includes new retail units, residential regeneration and creation of public hub space.

The committee gave its backing to the feasibility work.

Committee member Neal Mitchell, who represents the area, described it as a fantastic opportunity.

He said: “It could have a huge effect on Ollerton high street and the whole community.”

Committee chairman Keith Girling said he was excited about what was put forward and that the council must do all it could to deliver what it could.

The district council will work with partners, including Ollerton and Boughton Town Council and the owners of the Forest Shopping Centre, to deliver the scheme.

The Forest Shopping Centre owners have indicated interest in redeveloping its site as part of the wider redevelopment, which could include town council land.

Mr Lamb said the proposals would reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, increase feelings of safety through a better town centre design, and improve the health and wellbeing of residents through accessibility of services.

The district and town councils will work with Forest Centre on the feasibility study and it is hoped that additional partners will join the scheme.

Funding of £300,000 has been allocated by the district council towards regeneration projects across Ollerton and money from the future sale of Ollerton Hall could also be used.

The town centre regeneration project is one of several projects planned for the town. A swimming pool is being created at Dukeries Leisure Centre, development plans are progressing for Ollerton Hall, and A614/617 road improvements.

In addition, there are regeneration plans for the Hallam Road/Stepnall Heights estates, but they are currently on hold pending Secretary of State approval of land transfer.
