First world war items sought for Saturday

Notts folk who have artefacts and memorabilia connected with the first world war in their homes are asked to take them along to Newark Showground on Saturday.

Most have been passed down from a grandfather or great uncle who brought them back as mementoes of their wartime service.

On Saturday, people have the chance to bring along these 'Great War Hidden Treasures' to be identified by a panel of experts.

Ten experts in documents, medals, photographs, trench art, uniforms and local regiments will be on hand to explain as much as they can.

The treasures will be photographed and documented and, if it is felt that they would be of interest to others, the owner will be asked if they would be willing, next year, to loan them for the 'Trent to the Trenches' exhibition.

Saturday's event is being held in the Sir Stuart Goodwin Pavilion, which will be signed from the entrance to Newark Showground.

Parking at Newark Showground is free. The postcode for sat nav is NG24 2NY.

There will be a cafe open selling refreshments.

The event will be open to the public from 10am until 3pm and even if you have no ephemera to bring along people are invited to attend to talk to the team about the preparations for next’s years Great War Centenary throughout the county.
