Angells Fisheries located at 143 Barnby Gate, Newark, Nottinghamshire has been shortlisted for the prestigious award of Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year 2024 in a competition run by the National Federation of Fish Friers




A fish and chip shop has made it into the short list of the National Fish and Chip Awards for 2024.

Angells Fisheries located at 143 Barnby Gate, Newark have made the grade so far and are hoping to progress further in the prestigious competition.

In total, 40 fish and chips from up and down the country are in with a chance of winning the title after making the shortlist.

The competition is organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony on February 28, 2024.

To be in with a chance of winning the title, each chip shop must first enter and then an expert judge assesses them on factors such as best practice on environmental issues, product knowledge, and their responsibilities as an employer.

The shop is the only one in Nottinghamshire to make it through the first round.

A spokesman from the business said they are hoping to make it through the next round and into the top 20 of the competition.

‘We’re delighted to be shortlisted for The National Fish & Chip Takeaway of the Year 2024," said the spokesman.

"It’s the 36th year of the awards and this is our first year being listed following our relaunch and reopening in September 2022.

"We’re really proud to be up there along with some great friers.

"This is a credit to the efforts and dedication of our whole team.

"We’ve received incredible support from our local community and are proud to put Newark on the map."

The shop is a family-run business with a focus on sustainability, setting high standards, and supporting the community.

Angells Fisheries previously was listed in The Fry Awards Best 50 Fish and Chips UK 2023.

It has been a good year for the business which also received the quality accreditation award for complying with the highest standards in their industry.
