Five great picnic spots in Nottinghamshire this summer
There’s something quintessentially British about enjoying a picnic. It’s an activity that’s suitable for all and it can create lasting memories as the sun beams down across the county.
As the warmer weekends draw in, it can be a good time to get the family together for a picnic, from the little ones enjoying their first summers to our parents and grandparents, who may not get out as much anymore or are living in nursing care for elderly residents and would like a day out with the family.
So, with the sun looking to say hello a little more, here are five perfect picnic spots across Nottinghamshire for you to start planning with…
Wollaton Park
Located just a few miles from Nottingham city centre, and a 40 minute drive from Newark, the historic park of Wollaton Hall is a great spot for a picnic, with wide open spaces for the kids to run around in and plenty of shady spots to avoid the midday sun.
It’s incredibly accessible, with plenty of facilities for families, as well as mobility parking and wheelchairs to really make the most of the park. It’s also a great opportunity to look at the fallow deer in the park, roaming freely.
Sherwood Forest
For tourists visiting Nottinghamshire especially, Sherwood Forest is a must-visit. While you’ll find plenty of towns surrounding the forest, ideal for food and drink, taking a picnic into the woodland offers a beautiful spot for a picnic.
There are so many trails to take, with many landmarks associated with Robin Hood, including Major Oak, a spot where Robin would hang out with his merry men, and most likely enjoy a picnic himself!
Colwick Country Park
Colwick Country Park is just 30 minutes from Newark and nestled alongside the Trent. It’s an expansive park with dozens of spots to lay a blanket and get the sausage rolls out.
The best spot is by the lake, where you get fantastic views, as well as the calmness of the open water. In fact, after your food you can even take to the waters on a rowboat and create some real memories.
Attenborough Nature Reserve
Attenborough Nature Reserve, located on the outskirts of Nottingham, is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. This beautiful wetland reserve encompasses a mosaic of habitats, including lakes, ponds, marshes, and meadows, teeming with birdlife and other wildlife.
Picnic tables are scattered throughout the reserve, offering convenient spots to enjoy a picnic lunch while taking in the sights and sounds of nature. Alternatively, spread out your blanket beside one of the tranquil lakeshores and watch for herons, kingfishers, and other waterfowl.
Rufford Abbey Country Park
Rufford Abbey Country Park is a delightful destination for a summer picnic surrounded by history and natural beauty. This picturesque park, located in the heart of Sherwood Forest, boasts scenic gardens, woodland trails, and a tranquil lake. Choose a spot beside the lake or under the shade of ancient trees and enjoy a leisurely picnic with family and friends.
After your meal, explore the park's historic ruins, including the imposing remains of Rufford Abbey, once a grand Cistercian monastery. Don't forget to visit the park's visitor centre and gift shop, where you can learn more about the history of the abbey and pick up souvenirs to commemorate your visit.
