Plans put forward to turn the former Watermill pub site, Newark, into flats and cottages

A planning application has sought to convert a former pub into flats.

The former Watermill pub, on Millgate, could be turned into four flats, with three further cottages to the rear.

Planning documents state the proposal “aims to deliver high-quality residential accommodation while preserving the architectural character of the existing building and making efficient use of a brownfield site.”

The Newark pub, which is grade II listed, ceased trading nearly three years ago and is said to have suffered from “deterioration and vandalism” during the period it has spent vacant.

The plans would see the ground floor of the pub converted into two one-bedroom flats, one with access to a private terrace space.

The first and second floors would each house one one-bedroom flat, with the first floor flat also benefitting from a private terrace and a living room separate from the kitchen diner.

Both ground floor flats and the second floor flat would have combined kitchen-living-dining areas.

Elements of the pub’s façade and traditional features are proposed to be retained as part of the plans.

Outside of the pub building, to the rear, an existing smoking shelter is pencilled for demolition.

This space, and the existing carpark, would house three two-storey cottages. One would be detached and the other two connected at the rear of the site.

All three are proposed to be two-bedroom homes, with separate kitchen and combined living and dining spaces, and private gardens.

Five parking spaces are planned for the site.

Documents stated the smaller size of the rental properties will attract people minimizing living costs and so not using a vehicle.

It also notes the site’s proximity to the town centre — which is within walking or cycling distance — as well as public transport in the area.
