Storm Babet; Flood warnings in place across Newark and Sherwood today (Sunday) including Newark town centre
Flood warnings are in place across the district this morning (Sunday) including for parts of Newark town centre.
A flood warning has been issued for riverside properties in Newark town centre.
This means flooding is expected.
The areas likely to be affected include Tolney Lane, Mather Road, Brewer's Wharf and Water Lane, and the riverside marinas.
Access in and out of Tolney Lane is already cut off.
A flood warning is also in place for riverside properties in Farndon, including Dorner Avenue, Wyke Lane and Marsh Lane.
Flood warnings are also in place for the River Trent at Newark Sugar Factory and Kelham Bridge, including the A616 Great North Road; the Trent at Holme, and at Fiskerton for Fiskerton Mill, including Rolleston Fields, Gorse and Nurseries.
The Environment Agency is urging people in these areas to protect themselves and their properties. This includes being ready to turn off gas, water and electricity, move things upstairs to safety and move their family, pets and cars to safety.
People should continue to monitor the local weather and river conditions and consider activating any flood protection products they may have.
River levels are rising on the Trent at the Colwick river gauge as a result of Storm Babet. Consequently, flooding of property is expected to continue.
Although no further significant rainfall is forecast, the Environment Agency expects river levels to remain high until Monday.
It says: “We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are patrolling watercourses in the area and liaising with emergency services.
“Please plan driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded and avoid contact with flood water.”
In addition to the flood warnings, flood alerts are also still in place for the rivers Devon and Smite.
Areas most at risk from this are low-lying agricultural land and roads.
Areas affected along the River Smite may include Church Gate and Bunnison Lane in Colston Bassett could be impassable, with potentially dangerous depths of flood water.
Areas around the River Devon could also be affected at Easthorpe, Bottesford, Belvoir Lane and the Woolsthorpe to Belvoir road in Woolsthorpe, Church Lane and Main Street in Muston.
