Warrior Hawks and Flowserve Santos football teams remember Liam Andrew at their match
Two teams of young footballers held a minute's silence, followed by a minute's clapping before their game on Saturday in honour of Liam Andrew.
The match involved his team, Warrior Hawks, who played Flowserve Santos at Newark Academy, Balderton.
"From soccer school to under eights, we all send our thoughts to Liam's family," said the footballers.
Liam, 6, of Beacon Heights, Newark, died peacefully in his sleep at Rainbows Hospice, Loughborough, with his parents Stuart and Amanda, by his side.
He had been diagnosed with a rare and inoperable form of brain cancer six month ago. It is highly aggressive and difficult to treat.
Lynsey Dolan, whose son was among the players, said it had been very emotional to see 16 youngsters pay respect to their friend.
She said her son had told her he was going to play so well it would make Liam proud, and he did.
"He has never played like he did on Saturday," she said. "The whole team played really well."
A total of £62.24 in change was donated by the Warrior Hawks, which was added to a copper collection at Coddington Primary School on Friday.
