Former Newark and Sherwood District Council office to be demolished this month

A former council housing association building will be knocked down after being left unused for more than two years.

Newark and Sherwood District Council’s planning committee gave permission for the former housing office, at the corner of Devon Road and Eton Avenue, Newark, to be demolished after it fell into a state of disrepair.

The building was previously used as one of the council’s housing offices for the Hawtonville area but is no longer used for this purpose, with services moved to the new Castle House headquarters and online.

The authority put forward plans to its own committee to discuss demolition, with councillors approving the proposal during a meeting on Tuesday.

Following demolition, the land will then be restored and levelled off with rubble from the demolition cleared from the site.

Speaking in the meeting, councillors welcomed the news, with one calling for the land to be used for housing.

Robert Crowe, who represents the Devon ward where the building is based, said: “I was consulted by the office when it was planned for closing, the footfall was very poor and it was rife for closing.

“It’s now looking sad and it’s right for demolition. It’s also a really good place for some extra housing and I will vote for this.”

Laurence Goff, who also represents the Devon ward, added: “We’ve had trouble in the past with anti-social behaviour and dumping [on this site] so we need to move forward.”

Documents confirm the council expects the demolition to take place on or around May 26 this year.
