A service to celebrate her life was held at All Saints’ Church in Hawton on Friday, July 2.

Lady Osborn leaves behind two daughters, Diana Edmonds and Jennifer Hine, and four granddaughters.

She was mayoress of Newark when her late husband, Alaric Hine, was mayor in 1972-73.

Lady Osborn was born in India in 1925 and spent most of her schooling years in the UK.

She went on to study a Bsc in economics and international relations at the London School of Economics.

She then worked in the Foreign Office after the war before meeting Alaric and getting married in 1949.

It was a year later in 1950 that the pair moved to Newark, which is where Lady Osborn lived until she died.

Notably, Lady Osborn survived a near-death experience in 1983 when a chimney fell through the roof of her house during a storm. Luckily, she managed to crawl out of the building relatively unharmed.

After Alaric died in 1984, Lady Osborn continued her services to the community.

She was part of Nottinghamshire Girl Guiding and the Nursing Cadets in particular for a number of years.

She also loved sports, including tennis, golf and skiing.

She earned the ladies’ singles champion title at Newark Tennis Club many times.

Lady Osborn married Sir John Osborn in 1989.

She was a committed member of the All Saints’ Church, Hawton, and Barnbygate Methodist Church in her later years, which is something she shared with husband.

The couple spent 25 happy years together travelling and spending time with family before his death in 2015.

Lady Osborn’s family have described her as a force for others who was kind and generous with her time.

They welcome donations to the Newark Emmaus Trust, which is a charity Lady Osborn chose herself because of her passion for helping the young people of Newark.

Go to www.egillandsons.co.uk to make a donation. Alternatively, you can send a cheque payable to the charity to E. Gill and Sons Ltd in Newark.
