Former captain of Newark golf club ladies’ team raises money for Motor Neurone Disease Association
A sports team former captain raised over £3,000 for a cause close to her heart after losing her mother.
Gillian Coupland was the ladies captain at Newark Golf Club for the 2023/24 season and for the team’s charity of the year, she picked Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Gillian chose the charity after her mother died of the disease in 2019, where she saw first-hand “the devastating effect it has on patients and their families”.
The sports team raised £3,000.52 throughout the year, with events such as raffles, cake stalls, bring-and-buy stalls and the club’s annual charity day saw over £1,200 raised.
There was an auction of four-ball vouchers to play other golf courses which the respective clubs donated.
Female members of the golf club and Gillian’s friend have also shown their support through donations.
Mrs Coupland said: “It is important to keep raising money and awareness for motor neurone disease.
“There is no cure and it is important that they have the funds to find one.”
Sharon King, the area manager for Neurone Disease Association West said: “It has been an absolute privilege to meet the ladies from Newark Golf Club and personally thanks them for their overwhelming support.
“Their donation is so important to people living with MND and their families and the funds they raised will help us to provide care and support, while funding research into potential new treatments. We are so grateful for everything they have done to support us.”
