Nottinghamshire Police arrested four people over Newark's Tolney Lane Traveller site shooting
Four people, including a teenager, have been arrested in connection with an investigation into an attempted murder on Newark’s Tolney Lane Traveller site.
Police responded to a call just before 4pm on Wednesday of last week that a man had been shot to his upper body and injured with a bladed weapon.
He was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged.
Rudolph Price, 50, of Tolney Lane, has been charged with attempted murder and was remanded to HMP Nottingham by magistrates to appear before the city’s crown court on a date to be fixed.
A teenager was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on Monday and bailed with conditions. A 28-year-old man had previously been arrested and bailed.
Earlier today, a fourth person was arrested in connection with the incident.
Detective Inspector Steve Wragg, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We are still in the early stages of our investigation and are working extremely hard to understand the full circumstances of this incident.”
Police divisional commander for Newark and Sherwood, Inspector Heather Sutton, said: “This was a targeted and isolated incident that has been investigated very swiftly.
“I understand that incidents involving firearms can cause considerable alarm, but I would like to stress that they are incredibly rare in the Newark area.
“We have maintained a heightened presence in the area throughout the week to further reassure residents, who I would like to thank for their patience and cooperation at what I know has been a difficult time.”
A second Traveller site, off Flint-ham Lane, Screveton, was visited by armed police and searched.
Detective Inspector Wragg confirmed: “Officers have carried out a number of searches. This included an intelligence-led search at a property in Flintham Lane, Screveton.”
Police officers were on Tolney Lane on Tuesday, offering community reassurance.
They answered questions and addressed concerns from the community and spoke to approximately 30 people.
Inspector Sutton said: “The majority of people we spoke to stated they were concerned in the days following the shooting, but once confirmed as a targeted attack, felt better that they were not at risk.
“They all said they welcomed the police on the lane and felt reassured when they saw us.
“The purpose of this event was to give members of the community the opportunity to talk to us about what had happened and ask any questions they have, in a more relaxed environment.
“Once again, I would like to thank the residents for their cooperation and support during this difficult time.”
Ten children from the Travelling community had a game of socially-distanced football with the police beat team.
The police lost the high-intensity end-to-end match on penalties.
Anyone with information about the incident should call 101, quoting reference number 471 of June 17, or Crimestoppers on 0800 111 555.
